Naren Young Named BOLS Cocktail Master 2006

Naren Young, who currently works at Pegu Club in New York, was awarded the title of Bols Cocktail Master 2006 for his “Occidental Blazer” cocktail, which exemplified the contemporary twist to a classic that the judges were looking for. Naren commented, “Cocktails have come a long way in the last 200 years and I strongly believe that by applying the basic principles of cocktail making, combining this with modern ingredients and letting your creativity loose, we have another 200 years of great cocktails to look forward to!”

The Occidental Blazer

  • 50ml Michter’s rye whiskey
  • 10ml BOLS apricot brandy
  • 10ml BOLS vanilla liqueur
  • 1 tsp. of spiced tincture (cardamom, cinnamon, star anise, clove)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla sugar
  • 1/2 fresh apricot (seed removed)
  • 1 star anise

Heat a brandy balloon with boiling water
Discard water and dry well
Fill a tumbler with boiling water
Place the balloon on its side, resting in the tumbler
Add all but last 2 ingredients and ignite
Slowly twist the balloon by its base until well warmed through
Slowly pour flaming mixture into another brandy balloon, allowing the blue flame to burn in mid air
Add the half apricot and star anise
Swirl and serve.

(Note to our American friends… 10 ml is approximately 1/3 of an ounce)
