The Museum of the American Cocktail
WORLD COCKTAIL DAY 2007
The earliest known definition of the word "cock-tail" occurred on May 13, 1806, when the editor of "The Balance and Columbian Repository" printed a response to a reader’s query as to what this word was, having seen in mentioned in the previous week’s edition. He defined it thusly:
"…Cock tail, then is a stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water and bitters…"
It is now over two-hundred years later, and the cocktail has become so commonplace as to have its true artistry and craftsmanship obscured, if not forgotten, by the years which have transpired.
The Museum of the American Cocktail was formed in 2004 to promote and stimulate public interest in the appreciation of the American Cocktail, while providing an educational and historical base through which bartenders could gather and broaden their knowledge and improve their craft. In 2006, we celebrated the 200th Anniversary of the cocktail at venues scattered across the world. In 2007 we plan on continuing the celebration and expanding the scope as well as broaden the participation.
This year’s celebration is open to any bar, restaurant, or establishment that is a current "Industry" member of The Museum of the American Cocktail, and wishes to show their interest in promoting the appreciation and history of the cocktail. Following the world-wide celebration, we will gather the details and anecdotes of the participating establishments and present them on our website.
If your establishment would like to participate, please fill out the participation form, and email it to wcd@MuseumOfTheAmericanCocktail.org before April 22nd.
